Art & Design (Graphic Communication)

Graphic Commuication is a dynamic and creative subject that focuses on visual problem-solving, design thinking, and communication. This course broadens the creative opportunities within the sixth form, offering a distinct pathway for students who may not feel suited to Fine Art but want to pursue a visually driven and design-focused discipline. 

It also provides a strong bridge between Art and Media, particularly for students interested in marketing, branding, advertising ot digital content creation. MyAV·¶ will benefit from opportunities such as enrichment talks, portfolio reviews, and direct progression pathways.

What does the course involve?

You will gain experience in a wide range of practical and digital skills, learning how graphic designers communicate ideas and messages through visual media. 

You will be assessed on your ability to:

  • Develop ideas through sustained investigations
  • Explore media, materials, and processes
  • Record insights and observations
  • Present personal, creative outcomes

Year One

 A series of preparatory mini-projects will introduce you to:

  • Typography
  • Illustration
  • Branding and Logo Design
  • Poster Design
  • Advertising
  • Printmaking and traditional processes
  • Digital media using Adobe photoshop and illustrator

Component 1 - A portfolio of work based on a theme or brief. Work from Year 1 will be assessed at AS Level. 

Year Two

Component 1 - Personal Investigation

An extended design project based on a theme of your choice, supported by a related written study (1000-3000 words.)

Component 2 - Externally Set Task

An exam project from OCR, where you will develop preparatory work and create a final outcome in exam conditions.

Progression

MyAV·¶ can progress on to:

  • Foundation Diploma in Art & Design
  • BA (Hons) degrees in Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation, Photography, Architecture, and other related fields.

Staffing and Facilities:

  • Delivered by experienced teachers with backgrounds in advertising, illustration and digital media.
  • Supported by staff with specialist expertise in graphics, creative arts, illustration and software delivery.
  • Taught in a dedicated studio with fully equipped IT, Adobe Creative Suite and drawing tablets.

Enrichment Opportunities:

  • Visits to design studios, galleries and exhibitions.
  • Links with HCA and professional designers.
  • Live briefs, competitions, and workshops mirroring industry practice.
